TRIBUTE TO ARCHBISHOP LAWRENCE A. BURKE S.J. PDF Print E-mail

The members of the Board, Management and Staff of Food For the Poor Jamaica, mourn the passing of Archbishop Lawrence A Burke, SJ, Archbishop Emeritus of Kingston  and  Director of Food For The Poor Inc. We express condolences to his family, ministerial colleagues and the entire Roman Catholic community.

Archbishop Burke grew up in humble circumstances and through hard work, discipline and a commitment to education, he rose to the highest office of the Roman Catholic Church both in the Bahamas and in his homeland Jamaica. It is no wonder that he had a genuine love for the poor and committed his life to pursuing social justice on their behalf. This was the spirit in which he served Food For the Poor as a director for many years.

We will also remember him for his sterling contribution to education in Jamaica as he taught and ultimately served as head master of St. George’s College. There he influenced the lives of young men, many of whom today as adults are themselves making meaningful contributions to the growth and development of our beloved country.

In paying tribute to him, Robin Mahfood, President of FFP Inc said “Archbishop Larry Burke was a true gentleman, a great Jesuit, a tremendous man and a honourable priest.  He was a servant of God and he had a great love for the poor. He was a man after my own heart.  We are thankful to God for his life and for giving us this humble man to be in our lives”.
